This field of action deals with the development of a sustainable, future-proof and digital city. Cities are becoming increasingly important as places to work and live, which increases both the desire and the need to make cities greener and more climate-friendlymore climate-friendly.

Jena is nestled in the Saale valley and stretches for around 15 kilometers along the river. The narrow valley space leads to a high density of functions and competing land uses. The compatibility of environmental and quality of lifequality of life therefore poses major challenges for Jena. Smart applications are to be used to enable sustainable and resource-efficient development of the city.

Processed urban data and new technologies should help to make the city mored space in a more forward-looking and interdisciplinary way and to implement innovative solutions that strike a balance between land requirements and land consumption in an urban-friendly way. Digital technologies enable the rapid and comprehensive collection of a wide range of environmental data, such as particulate matter, humidity and temperature measurements. This data provides valuable information on many topics and supports the more efficient and effective implementation of planned measures. One example of this is the Optimization of watering routes in urban green maintenance: water is used as needed, routes are shortened and green areas are kept vital. The prerequisite for this is the collection and processing of data from special sensors on soil moisture and from weather stations on local precipitation from weather stations about local precipitation.

What does the Smart City project want to achieve in field of action 2?

We design and test innovative solutions to make Jena an even better place to live, work and study. As part of the Smart City model project, we want to develop and use new technologies and smart applications to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Jena.

Modern technologies and applications are to be used to make the urban ecotope more diverse and sustainable. Smarte applications should enable urban society to participate and help shape the city. For their part, digital tools help to implement participation more flexibly, transparently, quickly and cost-effectively. Our Goal is to use the knowledge gained from the Measures and thus enable transfer to other districts and cities.
