Sub-project “Smart Neighborhood Jena-Lobeda”:
“Establishment and Operation of a Telemedicine Room”

Telemedicine applications are to be tested in the Smart Neighborhood Jena-Lobeda. To this end, a special room will be set up in one of the apartment buildings and equipped with the appropriate medical and communication technology. The goal is to eventually enable access to healthcare regardless of time or distance—an issue that is becoming increasingly important, particularly for people with limited mobility and those living in rural areas. The pilot project focuses primarily on necessary and practical processes, structures, equipment features, and legal frameworks. Numerous relevant stakeholders—including doctors, health insurance providers, pharmacies, the University Hospital, and medical and nursing staff—will be involved. The care model is to be developed by summer 2027 to the point where it serves as a transferable model in terms of economic viability, functionality, and practicality. In addition, the goal is to break down barriers and reservations and build trust in innovative digital technologies.

Current Status

• Start: February 10, 2022
• End: August 31, 2027

Milestones Achieved

• A feasibility study for the project has been completed
• The cooperation agreement with the municipal utilities regarding the project has been signed
• The telemedicine room has been set up
• The first planned use case (patients with facial paralysis) is underway in cooperation with Jena University Hospital
• Regular consultation hours for general medicine, surgery, and dermatology are offered
• Expansion of the initiative: Transfer of the telemedicine room concept to rural areas (Crossen an der Elster and Langenwolschendorf)—approval has been granted by the funding agency
• Cooperation agreements have been signed with the municipalities of Crossen an der Elster and Langenwolschendorf 
• The setup and operation of telemedicine rooms in rural areas are underway
