Sub-project of the Smart Neighborhood Jena-Lobeda initiative:
“Establishment and Operation of Health Apartments”
The Smart Neighborhood is located in the immediate vicinity of the Jena University Hospital (UKJ). Initially, two health apartments will be set up for UKJ outpatients and day patients who do not live in Jena, as well as for patients awaiting follow-up treatment after an inpatient stay or receiving transitional care, and their family members.
These accessible spaces are modern and functionally equipped, yet offer a home-like atmosphere. They enable nursing care, telemedicine, and tele-physical therapy through innovative technologies such as voice-controlled smart home applications, nursing beds, a height-adjustable kitchen, an emergency system, a rentable electric wheelchair, smart TVs, assistance and information robots, and a telemedicine room. If necessary, a nursing service can be called in.
The health apartments serve as a short-term care option between an inpatient hospital stay and returning home, for which there is high demand. As with the telemedicine room, the goal is to test processes, structures, and equipment features in order to establish an economically viable and transferable model.

- The user base is constantly expanding; most recently, in addition to semi-inpatients, day patients from Jena University Hospital have also been admitted
- The University Hospital will take over operation of the health apartments as of January 1, 2026
