Kick-off for the pilot phase of pedestrian frequency measurement in Jena's city center
On October 30, 2025, the official starting signal was given for the pilot phase of the measure "Pedestrian frequency measurement in the city center of Jena" took place. The kick-off meeting brought together representatives of the Jena Smart City project, the city administration, the city's own businesses, business development and the Fraunhofer Institute IOSB-INA from Lemgo.
The aim of the project is to set up a digital infrastructure that will make it possible to continuously record and analyze pedestrian and visitor flows in the city centre. In addition to the pure frequency measurement, movement directions and patterns are also to be examined. On this basis, it should be possible to make data-based decisions in the areas of urban development, environment and traffic in the future.
The pilot phase will run until June 30, 2026 and includes the test areas of Marktplatz, Johannisstraße and Kirchplatz. Suitable measurement systems will be installed and put into operation there over the coming months. As part of the test phase, the technology selection, site conditions, data transmission and analysis as well as the development of internal dashboards will be tested, among other things.
The main purpose of the kick-off was to coordinate the objectives, procedure and responsibilities within the sub-project. A central component was also the joint inspection of the planned pilot areas.
The aim of the pedestrian frequency measurement is to create a basis for gaining well-founded insights into the use of public spaces in Jena in the future and to provide targeted support for municipal specialist services in their work.
