The specialist group meeting on 02.02.26 focused on the topic of LoRaWAN and IoT applications. The aim was to present existing application scenarios and discuss the potential for future joint use cases.

Sub-project manager Olivia Busch from the Smart City Jena project kicked things off with an introduction to LoRaWAN technology and its use in an urban context. In particular, the use case of soil moisture from the sensor-based urban green maintenance project was presented. This shows how sensor technology can be used to support data-based decisions on the maintenance of urban green spaces. Other current and potential fields of application were also named, including waste and parking sensors and, in the future, pedestrian frequency measurements.

Stadtwerke Jena then presented its existing and planned use cases in the field of IoT/LoRaWAN. Among other things, the use of heat meters and solutions for monitoring the pipe network, which help to increase efficiency and detect faults at an early stage, were presented.

Finally, the participants exchanged views on possible joint applications. It became clear that LoRaWAN as a technological basis enables a wide range of synergies between the city and municipal utilities and offers potential for future projects.
