Telemedicine room: digital healthcare turns one year old
In January 2024, an innovative pilot project was launched in the smart district of Jena-Lobeda to improve healthcare through digital solutions. The telemedicine room, part of the city of Jena's Smart City strategy and funded by the Smart City project, has already made significant progress in its first year in cooperation with Stadtwerke Jena. "The Smart City team is proud to have created an innovative model together with strong partners such as Stadtwerke Jena and Jena University Hospital that shows Digital healthcare solutions work - and are needed. As a sponsor of this Smart City project, we have helped shape its development from the very beginning: from the idea to its successful implementation," explains Dorothea Prell, overall project manager of the Smart City Jena project.
Initial successes and future developments
Following a successful innovation workshop in January 2024, the telemedicine room was designed in close collaboration with Jena's municipal utilities, Jena University Hospital and other partners. The first pilot applications took place in 2024, including treatments for facial nerve paralysis. From the first quarter of 2025, the room will be expanded to include a GP video consultation, offering tenants in the neighborhood quick and easy access to medical care.
A step into the future
The telemedicine room is a key project for digital healthcare in Jena. The model will be continuously developed until 2027 and offers an important future model for healthcare that can also be transferred to rural areas.
A GP video consultation in the telemedicine room is to be introduced in the first quarter of 2025. The service is initially aimed specifically at the tenants of the Smart Neighborhood and offers low-threshold access directly in the residential complex. Patients do not need a smartphone or tablet, as the technical equipment is provided in the telemedicine room.
